Trying to remember a time before we had voicemail isn’t easy to do. It seems like it has been around forever. Prior to voicemail people relied on answering machines to deliver the phone messages that had been missed for whatever reason.
Before these inventions if you called someone that wasn’t at home they would never know it you would have no way of leaving any kind of message for them.
