What Is Bluetooth and Why It Is Important?

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

It appears unlikely that when Danish King Harald Blatant united sworn rivals in the Middle Ages he could have ever foresaw the influence of his actions or the postmodern application of his name – spelled as “Harold Bluetooth” in English. Seen as the electronic equivalent to the Harold’s joining impact, Bluetooth is a new tech that allows diverse appliances from a variety of manufacturers (and, in the case of mobile phones, diverse providers) to “speak” to each other on a shared wire-free platform. in effect an ultralow energy radio signal, Bluetooth allows wire-free access to particular devices in about thirty feet. that all sounds difficult and, almost certainly rather boring, but the net result of such technology is added flexibility and ease for those who often depend on handheld electronic appliances such as cell phones, cameras and PDAs. According to Michael Foley, executive chief of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, “Bluetooth was created on the attitudes of low power, low cost, security and ease of utilization.”

The advantage of Bluetooth-enabled tools is that Bluetooth is a standard operating “system” for shortage of a better word. a variety of devices from divverent brands can converse wirelessly. Foley notes, “In numerous cases, engaged corporations can be opponents or have nothing in common aside from Bluetooth. For example, Bluetooth makes it possible to apply your favorite Microsoft keyboard with an Apple Power Book.” Also, with a Bluetooth-enabled camera (or camera/telephone) you can wirelessly remit photos to each Bluetooth printer and get direct prints. you could also compare and synchronize calendars in the PDA and transfer files, music or images from camera to pc or pc to computer or from phone to telephone. With Bluetooth-enabled phones you are able to wirelessly remit contact information, meeting requests and e-mail messages to different paired appliances.

From an automotive perspective, Bluetooth presents the ability to utilize the individual mobile phone with an in-car system. Cars such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Toyota Prius, Saab 9-3 and others present Bluetooth as a factory-installed attribute. virtually every automaker offers a model with Bluetooth capability apart from: Lotus, Isuzu, Scion, Smart and Suzuki. What makes Bluetooth so engaging (additionally to ease of use) is its rather low price. for instance, Chrysler’s system is called UConnect; the selection costs approximately 310 dollars and consists of a Bluetooth receiver (mounted out of sight), a mic and a little control pad mounted tothe dashboard. Sprint hopes its edgy EVO smart phone gives it a wireless edge

Aftermarket kits are additionally accessible if you’re not in the market for a new vehicle. a corporation called Parrot produces several adapter kits as does Motorola and others. The kits are quite reasonably priced with prices starting well below two hundreds dollars.

even though you do select an aftermarket system, Bluetooth offers all the safety and convenience of a factory-equipped automobile telephone combined with the freedom of a handheld mobile phone. The person gotta have a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone in order to take benefit of the in-car attribute, but those cell phones are standard and aren’t noticeably more expensive than phones with no Bluetooth (some Bluetooth phones are even less costly than a phone without the such characteristic ). Cell phone makers for example Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Sony-Ericsson currently sell phones with Bluetooth abilities.

With a Bluetooth phone, you are able to make and get calls from your car applying the existing mobile phone number. You utilize minutes in the regular way and the fees are indicated on your normal mobile phone bill. But perhaps the most excellent characteristic is that to make and get calls on your Bluetooth mobile phone, you do not need a hard-wired connections or docking station. OnStar has a similar feature, nevertheless, it requires that you have an OnStar-equipped car (typically a GM product) and you must apply Verizon as the mobile phone carrier. Even then, your automobile will have a authonomous phone number and you are going to need to forward your mobile phone calls to the car phone. With Bluetooth, if the phone is on and someplace within the automobile, you’ll be able to make and get mobile phone calls. No call forwarding is required because the telephone “sees” your vehicle like any other external appliance – akin to a wireless headset. If the automobile’s interface or the phone allows the utilization of voice commands, you can make and receive mobile phone calls while in the vehicle with no having to touch buttons.

The application gets even more remarkable for motorcycle possessors, because the accessibility of a Bluetooth-enabled helmet makes it possible to speak on the mobile phone at the same time as piloting a motorcycle – not that we’re accrediting that sort of thing. In interaction with Motorola, Italian helmet maker Momo has advanced a Bluetooth helmet that not simply looks cool, but has an incorporated speaker and microphone. This is not unlike preexisting technology , which allows bikers within close proximity to speak to one another through two-way radio technology, but undoubtedly the capability to make and get phone calls pushes the technology forward by bounds and leaps. The BMW scheme V helmet uses similar technology but is a full-face helmet that makes speaking via the mobile phone a more realistic endeavour.

at the same time as the potential for Bluetooth technology looks nearly unlimited, its introduction in the vehicle can prove to be much more than just suitable. all the local and federal authorities have been increasingly scrutinizing the wisdom of letting motorists talk on the telephone while driving. Bluetooth can be a expertise , which offers a safe compromise between the people who want to exercise their inalienable right to yak on the phone and those whose job it’s to defend us from those who yak on the telephone at the same time as piloting a two-ton chunk of glass and steel.

Ease of utilization united with increasing availability leads us to consider that Bluetooth will soon turn out to be as usual as huge hair at a Bon Jovi concert. If you are shopping for a new telephone, camera or PDA, find one with Bluetooth capacity. eventually it’ll make your life that much easier.

What The Heck Is a Droid Phone? And Which One Should I Ask Santa For This XMas?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Verizon’s newest entry into the very competitive smartphone market — the HTC Droid Eris — was introduced last month with a provocative new ad campaign dissing the iPhone. But is this cool gadget for real, and should you believe the hype calling it the “iPhone Killer?”

While I can’t imagine that HTC will steal millions of loyal iPhone customers from Apple, it does show off the superiority of Google’s open-source android operating system. Also, this little beauty is absolutely loaded with features and apps that you won’t even find on the new (and pricier) Motorolla droid…making this $99 Eris droid the best value around in a smartphone — hands down.

This means that even in a slumping economy, for under a hundred bucks you can still give a tricked-out smartphone as a gift this Christmas.

HTC really loaded this new droid with plenty of standard apps, features, and mobile services courtesy of Google…Here’s just a few:

1. With the 5- megapixel camcorder on the back of the device, you can shoot a video, send it to your friends, upload it to Youtube, and and view it on the 3.2 inch high-resolution screen in seconds.

2. The Eris droid has lots of custom apps that come standard, many (like the Twitter app) which you will only find on this phone…You can also stop in at the Android Market (think Star Wars) to download thousands more for your new smartphone.

3. The Eris is Bluetooth and WiFi enabled, which gives you many options in term of connectivity. And with Google Maps installed on this droid, this phone doubles as a GPS device too.

It’s great that the HTC includes “Multi-Touch” as a standard feature on all their smartphones these days, and the Eris is no exception. This is a user-friendly interface that gives you “pinch and zoom” capabilities in the browser (and it’s a feature that isn’t included on the new $200 Motorola droid!).

Smartphones are notorious for killing batteries, but I’ve had no problem with the Droid Eris. The specs say that a single charge will give you 3 1/2 hours of talk time on the Droid…In my experience I would say that this is a conservative number. I haven’t had it quit on me yet during the day, and I’m on the phone quite a bit at work.

My only beef with the Droid Eris is a small one: It would be nice to have a physical keyboard on this phone, but maybe I’m old school. The virtual keyboard featured on this device is actually lively and responsive, and nicer than many other phones with “real” keyboards.

At the end of the day, HTC’s Droid Eris is a super little device: is boasts a beautiful interface, superior fit and finish, and tons of standard features and extras. And you will have a very hard time finding a droid with comparable features for under $100 this holiday season.

Don’t make these 3 mistakes when you purchase your next android phone…Get the skinny from Dave before you buy right here.
