Excel Dashboard Performance Reporting

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Excel dashboards are some form of visual reporting mechanism. Excel dashboards are completely different from your default spreadsheet report that is usually created in excel.

Dashboard reporting based on the key principles should bridge that gap between systems and the information needs of management. More importantly, good dashboard design and data modelling should help information workers and analysts to spend less time with manual excel tasks and more time analysing information.

One page display

If your dashboard contains too much information it will fail to convey the data effectively. Also, the data might end up on more than one page. Remember, our aim is to communicate a message about the data, don’t include every bit of data in a dashboard. The information displayed should be the most relevant and within the left and upper part of the screen. This will depend on the purpose of the dashboard. The other point here is that if something is off-page, then it can’t be viewed quickly. It might not be seen at all. The other reason for this is when you print your dashboard, it should also fit to a single page.

Simple to understand

An excel dashboard should help to visually identify trends and patterns quickly without confusion. This means that there should not be any visual competition or chart junk present. Fancy formatting distracts users from the key messages. This includes fancy 3D charts, logos, pictures and gauges, which don’t communicate key messages well and take up too much space. Visual reports should help managers decide if any further action or drilling down is required. The use of visual attributes should be used to aid visual perception.

Priority of dashboard components

Adding extra interactivity to your dashboard, such as being able to select a certain region or being able to drill down can make a huge difference in the perceived usability.

Company’s Functions Should Determine Choice Of Office Software

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Starting a new business, or upgrading an existing business, brings with it a host of decisions. Once the type of business is chosen and the business plan is place, it’s time to begin setting up management, and that requires choosing office software.

For instance, keeping track of clients is the initial step in business. This involves more than merely logging their transactions, which could be done in any accounting software. Today the most successful businesses focuses on what B-schools term “Customer Relationship Management, ” or CRM. This means that once you’ve sold a product or service to a customer, you want to keep that customer for several reasons.

First, it’s more economical to keep an existing customer than to go out and to replace it with a new customer. This reality affects the bottom line significantly. Second, extraordinary customer service is one of the keys to business success today. Recognizing your clients as people, not merely as figures in a spreadsheet, gains the company a reputation as a firm that truly values its customers, not just their money. Third, choosing the right CRM software enables managers not only to keep track of customers, but also to maintain records that help apply metrics to measure sales performances. In other words, business managers and owners should seek out CRM office software that maintains client data for personal contact and can generate reports on sales performance. To maximize profits, choosing reliable yet cheap office software should be taken into consideration.

Next, Customer Relationship Management Software should be networked with accounting software and manufacturing software. After all, how will the company fill the client’s order, and complete the exchange of money for goods or services, unless the information is sent from sales to the accounting and production departments?

Manufacturing companies typically have some kind of software that will generate a “job ticket” based on information supplied by sales. At the same time, the information from sales should also alert the accounting department to do one of two things: set up a new file for a new client, or note that an existing client has submitted a new order and be prepared to generate an invoice once the work is completed.

In addition, companies that produce goods also have to keep track of supplies and/or components for the making of those goods. This function often is spread across several departments, with the accounting unit ultimately responsible for pulling together a inventory report that is sent to all managers.

Finally, there’s the need to communicate. In these days of digital communication, this can mean emails, websites, digital newsletters, electronic slide presentations, podcasts and even online videos. Written communication hasn’t disappeared, either; it’s still necessary to write letters, record contracts and distribute brochures, marketing kits and other printed matter. Thus office software for communication has to take into account that business today operates in a world where both print and digital communication are required.

When choosing office software, it’s possible find entire suites of programs that are related to one another to handle these functions. The best of such suites are easy to learn and use, exchange data among programs with few problems, and are cost-effective for the business.

Buy cheap office software in the reputable online kingdom at low, affordable prices. Customers can expect friendly and efficient service while shopping for Adobe software and Microsoft software.

Increase Profits With Corporate Communications Using Publicity Marketing And Promotion

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

There are many ways to increase the results a company is achieving from their marketing, but there is one approach that any company can take that is particularly effective. This strategy is known as corporate communications using publicity marketing and promotion. This advertising technique generally consists of the use of free gifts and other promotions to attract new and existing customers towards a company’s products.

If you want to use this type of marketing for your business, you should be aware that there is truly no right or wrong way to use this type of marketing. When you are creating your marketing strategy, it is always a good idea to analyze what is working, as well as what is not working, for the other companies operating in the global economy.

Most customers within the global economy are always on the lookout for a good deal. These customers are certainly attracted to free gifts and other types of giveaways too. When you use this type of marketing, you are placed in a great position to create a buzz around the products and services your business provides.

If you do not want to spend a great deal of time and money on your promotional offerings, you should be aware of the other marketing strategies that you can implement in order to increase the amount of awareness your company receives. Also, if you want to attract many customers, while still building a strong relationship with all of your customers, you may want to take advantage of the strategies that use a variety of small gifts, rather than one large gift, in the giveaway your company offers.

Any company that wishes to utilize corporate communications using publicity marketing and promotion should always take into account that the primary purpose of this form of advertising is to increase the communication that your company is maintaining with customers. A relationship with customers is more likely to increase the amount of sales a company makes compared to a company that places no emphasis on building relationships with clients.

When you are attempting to build relationships with your customers, it is likely that you will discover this to be an incredibly challenging task. Many customers have their own lives and relationships to worry about. This makes them less eager to enter into ongoing communications with your company on a regular basis. For this reason, many companies have realized that portraying an idea or concept is generally much easier to do.

Even though it is often considerably difficult to create a relationship with customers, you should certainly not discount the importance of this process. If you can build a relationship with customers, you will be in a great position to create a loyal relationship. When you have many loyal relationships with customers, you will be in an even better position to create a steady stream of revenue for your business. The longer you can stay in touch with the customers you are communicating with, the more likely it will be that you are creating loyal customers too. You should keep all of these factors in mind during the creation of your marketing campaign.

Marketing And Publicity Tips For Self Promotion

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Writing a book is a life-defining experience for a writer. It can be very difficult when the author realizes that their book has not defined anyone else’s life. This is especially true when you rely upon the book for your livelihood. You must get people to buy and read it. But how? What are the best author and book marketing tips?

Funnily enough, many authors are making money by writing books about how to promote books. These may or may not have all of the answers, but they certainly have the right ideas. They advertise online. For just a few dollars for a web page (or maybe a free web page, when you can find it) you can get numerous Google hits. Use the new technology we have. Make YouTube videos, advertise on Facebook, do anything to ensure people hear about you.

If you are a small town author, it is all the better. Living in a big city gives you access to the biggest publishers and agents, but writing a book there is no great news for anyone. In a small town you are far more likely to be noticed. The newspaper will want to interview you, the local news station will do a story on you, book stores may want you in for a book signing. Take advantage of every single one of these opportunities, because they will not come around again.

You want to give just enough information about the book to make people interested. Do not talk too much about it or give anything away. Be a professional and think about the business of you. Every story or interview is just like a job interview. Do not say anything off-color or make stupid jokes. You do not want to risk alienating a single person. Make sure you are well spoken but do not try to sound ‘too smart’ and risk sounding like an idiot when no one has any clue about what you are talking about. Not everyone knows critical theory or the Laconian or Derrida point of view. Keep it simple and entertaining.

Dress well, too. If you do not dress professionally for public appearances, what makes anyone think that you can write professionally? Play up your contacts, you affiliation with local schools or business or sports teams. Make people proud that you came from their area. Keep in mind that people know your parents or remember you from high school. They want to see what you have done with your life.

Do not be afraid to put up fliers and do television spots. Network as much as you can, cash in favors, and do not burn any bridges. You will need as much help as you can get in moving your publicity up to the next level.

Become A Top National Expert For Outstanding Career Success

Monday, February 1st, 2010

To be a top expert in your field you will need to have a vast knowledge of the issues facing your industry. Don’t worry, it’s not hard and it’s not a lot of work to do this. The first thing to do is to identify your major areas of expertise and then create sub-categories that reflect the reality for each one. For example if you are a career expert you can talk about how to get a job in a tough economy, how to get hired when everyone else is not, or how to position yourself to get hired in the future. You see, there are lots of ways to apply your talent and knowledge to the issues at hand.

Your professional and expert BIO is the first thing you need to create. Pack it with evidence that you are an expert in the field such as your education, awards, recognitions, accomplishments, associations you belong to along with a list of any previous publicity or media placements you have received. Your bio should support your area of expertise and leave out the personal information that does not matter to the media such as hobbies or how many kids you have although you can mention the location of your nearest major city as sometimes the media likes to know where you or your business is located. Create a list of the shows you want to on, or the media you want to get into and build a list of contacts at the media outlets. You will introduce yourself to your media contacts and then once a story hits the news where you are qualified to provide talking points you can connect with your contacts. They already know you and it will be more likely they will choose you for the opportunity.

Get positioned with the media in advance so you will be set up and ready to go when a story or news events emerges that is perfect for your commentary. An example is about a career or workplace expert who can comment on the industry events from workers losing their jobs to the unemployed going back to school. If a news event happens, such as a new jobs report or unemployment report coming out, your expertise, commentary and analysis will be in demand.

Once you spot a news event where you are the perfect person to comment, let your contact list know about the event and be available when they call you. Let them know your availability and certainly be ready to drop everything to give an interview or head down to the TV studio. Be sure to know in advance, the media’s style. You do this by watching your target shows, following the journalists on your lists and reading the magazines or newspapers and visiting the internet news sites daily.

Media training is your key to success. Invest in a few good sessions that teach you how to be a top notch media analyst. Everyone has some trouble spots they need to address and media training gives you the chance to make these changes in advance of your TV spot or radio appearance. Some people speak real slowly with a lot of “ummmm’s” throughout their commentary. This style of speech is not appropriate for the news or an interview on the radio or with a journalist as it does not compel anyone to listen and most people watching or listening will get distracted. Plus, speaking without command of your knowledge pegs you as an amateur and the media will have no choice but to move on.

Leadership Communication And Team Dynamics

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The role of transformational leaders is to communicate clearly how the changes in the organization will impact their team members. Too often we assume that because someone has made it to a leadership or management role then they know instinctively how to do this but frequently this is not the case. However there are tools available to ensure that they stay on message and feel comfortable in communicating face to face with their employees about sensitive change issues.

Leadership communication is all about structure and key messages and the easiest way this can be managed is through team briefing. This is a formalised tool that ensures all leaders and managers communicate the key messages and provides feeback about what employees what to know more about. There are three levels of messages that are cascaded through the organization.

1. The first is the CEO who at his executive team briefings decides which topics for that week he wants communicated to employees. 2. This is then circulated out to his direct reports who then have to communicate those issues and decide the top 5 issues for their respective divisions and then finally the top 5 issues for their teams. 3. So the only aspect of a team brief that changes is the last section which is how what is happening in the company and our division relates to the work we are doing in our team. This is the section that always changes depending on your team in the division.

Leadership communication is a difficult consistent behaviour to create as part of an organizational culture but is is essential for transformational leadership to be successful. With team briefing there is a formalised approach to employee communication and team dynamics that ensures everyone knows what is happening in the organization at the same time.

Team briefing has the added discipline of occuring on a regular basis and and therefore all leaders and managers can know in advance and plan for the next team briefing session.

The key factor to the success of team briefings is that they are driven by the CEO. Whenever your CEO talks with managers and employees he should ask whether they had in fact attended a team briefing and how regularly they occured. This way if they are not he can say to his direct reports, “I am conducting my team brief with you now so there is no excuse for you not to do the same with your team members”.

So these are the keys to making Team Briefings work.

1. The process must be simple and easy to follow. 2. Ownership of the team briefing process must reside with the Company President and this will ensure that all leaders and managers in the organization will follow the process. 3. The topics included in the team briefing notes for the organization and the division must be issues that leaders and managers are comfortable in discussing and have knowledge of to answer any questions. 4. Team briefings only work if managers and leaders feel that there is a feedback loop that ensures they can quickly obtain answers to questions employees have. 5. At the most a team briefing should only take .15 minutes and can either be held as a stand alone meeting or incorporated into regular team updates.

The best aspect of team briefing is that is it a very easy tool for leaders and managers at every level of the organization to use to ensure that consistent messages are delivered to employees in a timely fashion. There will however always be topics of major significance that employees will just simply want to hear from their Company President or CEO. This includes leaders and managers throughout the organization – this is the essence of transformational leadership, communicating with leaders at all levels of the organization and tailorimg messages to suit the audience.

How To Use Publicity And Branding Marketing Strategies To Empower Your Business

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

One of the easiest ways to increase the revenue of a company is through the creation of a business strategy using publicity, business promotion, branding and marketing techniques. Publicity campaigns can come in a variety of different forms, but a publicity campaign’s primary goal is to always increase the awareness that the public has of your brand. As you increase the awareness that the public has of your brand, you are increasing the size of your customer base. As you increase the size of your customer base, you are certainly in a better position than you were before you attempted to gain the public’s attention. At this point, not only is your customer base going to get even larger through the spread of word of mouth advertising, but your company will also be able to make more sales to more clients thanks to the larger customer base.

When a company desires to increase their popularity, there are many different techniques that can be used. One of the most popular ways to increase a company’s publicity is through a press release. This form of marketing is very popular, because when you issue a press release, you increase the chances that a media company will pick up on the story you have created.

The primary reason why the press release form of publicity gets more attention than you can possibly estimate before you create one is mostly due to the fact that media companies that receive your press release are likely going to want to talk about the major current events occurring within your company.

Another great way to increase your company’s publicity is through the use of other written forms of communication. If you are running a small business, or you have employees who have a great deal of technical experience and knowledge in specific subject areas, you can be sure that media publications will be interested in what your company has to say.

When you present information to readers as a professional or expert, they will trust the information that you present to them, but more importantly they have more reason to trust your company after reading the article if you showcase your expertise well. You can generally gain recognition for your business as the media outlet usually identifies the contributors including name, credentials and the name of your company.

There are many approaches that you can take if you wish to expand the popularity of your company and brand through the use of publicity. You can access publicity less expensively if you do the work yourself or within your company. When you don’t have to spend that much time on the publicity that you create, you can be sure that you may have more funds to create many different publicity campaigns. The more publicity campaigns you create, the more popular and well known your company will become in the long run.
