Tips For College Professors

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Sorry pen and paper, your golden age has come to an abrupt end. Taking notes is just faster with a computer, and researching and writing papers can be done simultaneously. The only trouble is computers can be a real problem for college professors.

Professors often find themselves vying for the attention of students engrossed in their computers during class time. Facebook chatting, playing games, watching silly video clips, or emailing, is normal behavior I’ve noticed while in college. I don’t think it’s fair to the college professors to lecture to a dead audience though, so I’m going to spill the beans. I’ll reveal some tricks that will help you know what your class is really up to.

Many times it’s quiet obvious when students aren’t paying attention. You can almost predict whether they will be listening or not depending on the class and the hour. If you teach an early morning class or a difficult subject, you will have a much harder time keeping an attentive audience. Also, if you don’t have strict computer policies, you are more likely to have students using their computers for other purposes.

Now, for the actual giveaways. When students giggle even though you’ve said nothing funny, have glazed eyes, click a lot, or keep up a constant stream of typing when no one else in the class is typing, they’re probably using their computers for other purposes. Also, little or no eye contact and expressions of frustration can be indicators of gaming. For those of you with Mac users in the class don’t let them trick you. Macs have a setting called hot corners that allow the user to position the mouse in one of the four corners of the screen and they serve as shortcuts. One setting enables everything pulled up, all documents, chats, or online screens to disappear, another allows the computer to go to sleep. Many college students will use these features when they see their professor coming. It only takes one second so Mac users are very hard to catch red-handed. The trick with the first setting is that as soon as you place the mouse back in that corner, all the things that disappeared will instantly reappear. In the case of sending the computer to sleep, if you’re fast enough, it won’t have time to go completely to sleep. Of course you’ll have to figure out which corner to go to, since the students can set up their own computers differently, but you should be able to figure it out.

Hopefully your students won’t get the best of you now. Speaking of letting people get the best of you, technology doesn’t have to be something you see in a negative light. As a matter of fact, technology can help you. Take home security systems for instance. Installing a security monitoring system can keep your home safe and prevent burglars from taking advantage of you.

Learn How To Be A Great Radio And TV Guest

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Want To Be A SMASH HIT Success On TV & Radio? Want to avoid media mistakes with your publicity & book promotion? Learn the publicity, TV, radio & media skills you need to be the media’s dream guest! The publicity special report includes a set of tried and true publicity tips to use while working with the media. You’ll learn the top pre-interview tips, on-camera or on-air tips, book promotion and publicity tips, media etiquette tips & lots more PR publicity pro tips to help position you as the media’s dream guest!

Tips! Don’t try to influence the producer’s or journalist’s original story or segment idea, even if you think you are helping. Give the media what they want. Usually these segments and stories are created by other editors or executive producers and the media you are speaking to does not have the authority to change the segment or story. They know what they want and want you to cooperate. If you have the point of view they are looking for, perfect. If not, it’s best to say no to the media rather than try to persuade them to do something different from their original plan. This way, they can book the segment and move on to the next segment. Stay on target, give them what they want if what they want is in your area of expertise, and don’t go off on any tangents. Stick to the script and they will come back again next time.

Another excellent rule to follow for publicity success is this: Never cancel your media opportunity after you have given your word, that is, you have said yes. If you cancel you leave everyone in bad shape as the supporting staff has made all of the preparations for the segment or story. It is set in stone on their end. If you suddenly cancel, you leave the media in a tough spot as they have to find a replacement. This causes lots of anxiety and is disruptive. One thing is certain, you will never be invited back and you might even earn a reputation as not being reliable and then nobody will want to work with you in the future as you cannot be trusted. This is a tough price to pay and that is how serious keeping your word with the media is for you.

Get ready for any pre-interviews or your interview with the media. Take the time to formulate your five talking points or conversation points so you will have your thoughts together and you are able to present them without sound uncertain or stumbling. If you “flunk” the pre-interview, yes you can do this by not sound confident, sounding boring, or no saying anything of relevance, the media will not be able to use you for the article or segment. Everything you do matters with the media. If they are not certain of your point of view, your knowledge or your ability to do the job, they have no choice but to move on to find another expert. Preparing in advance gets your thoughts together and if good for you and for your media contact.

The media moves fast and they need to be able to connect with you quickly, at all times. If you have presented yourself as the guest or expert, be available. Give the media your cell phone for direct access. Do not make them go through voice mail or layers of phone prompts. Just give them your cell phone and when it rings, answer it. Set it up in advance, that if your cell phone rings, you will be in position to answer it. If for any reason, the call goes to voice mail, access it immediately and return the call right away. This way, the media will remember you as a great guest.

Discover more tips on how be the media’s dream guest. If you want publicity on TV or publicity on radio, learning the skill set of an experienced and professional guest is critical. Have incredible success with your publicity and promotion initiatives by learning the professional skill set of a great guest. Find out how!

Key Guidelines Relating To German Shepherd Training

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

All dogs need handling differently whilst training them, and training a German Shepherd is considered to be the toughest challenge. The process needed can be learned quite easily and a dog can be very self satisfying.

All dogs are said to be loyal, but the German Shepherd is also loving and very clever. If you are lucky enough to have a well trained one as a pet, you don’t need me to tell you what brilliant pets they make.

A well trained dog always makes a better pet than an untrained animal, and much easier to control. Here are a few suggestions to get to your German Shepherd pup to that stage.

The Alpha dog will always be instinctively sought out by the German Shepherd. This instinct came in very useful in their original roles when they were used to herd their owners’ sheep.

You need your dog to take their lead from you and to do this you must become the alpha dog. Don’t hold back when remonstrating them, they really need the discipline.

Authoritative is one thing, but you must never be physically abusive. They are one of the most sensitive breeds and react badly to being disciplined physically. They can suffer long term mental suffering due to being struck.

Be firm and strong and don’t lose your temper when your puppy is naughty, they all are and you should know that. They will soon learn who is boss if you are firm but fair, a change in your tone of voice will soon be all that your dog needs to know he has gone too far.

Ideally, you want mutual respect between you and your dog, and this is easily achieved by heaping praise on them when they deserve it. This makes them very eager to please and they will do anything you ask of them in return for the praise or treat that will make them feel great.

The Best Way To End A Relationship

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

It’s never easy to end a relationship, and it gets tougher the longer you’ve been together. It’s always an awkward thing to accomplish and might even be one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do.

People and circumstances change. Our aspirations, desires and outlook evolve as we mature, and what suited us in one setting may be wrong for us in another. Because of this, many, but not all, relationships come to an end at some point. It’s just one of those things.

If you’re sure that your current relationship is not right for you, then you should end it as soon as you can. Staying in a relationship that makes you uncomfortable is no good for either of you.

Breaking up is never easy and the hardest part will be your initial announcement. Especially if your partner is not in the same place as you. Once you’ve cleared that obstacle, give the other person a chance to take the bad news on board and get on with life.

You’ve made a difficult choice and should remember that you’ve done it for a reason. Leaving this relationship will enable you to experience the joys of freedom and independence, or a new, more fulfilling, partnership.

When you’re absolutely sure that you want to make a break, take a tip from me and don’t use text messaging, email or even the phone to do it. You might get away with these methods if you’ve only been seeing each other for a short time, but otherwise, they’re not a good idea.

Meet in person, and do it in a public setting. This will eliminate any potential awkwardness and it’ll make the break clean. Doing it in private can lead to something that drags on in a very awkward manner, and you’ll have a very hard time asking the person to leave.

It’s something you have to do, although you’d rather not. You have to take your courage and do it, and remember that it’s best for both of you. In time, you’ll feel a lot better about yourself.

Controlling Anger Secrets

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Anger is simply one of a number of emotions that contribute to the true character and personal power of a person. The way that you handle and control your anger helps determine the way the world responds to you.

Uncontrolled anger is dangerous and terrifying and usually leads to more anger. The other anger is controlled anger, and it is used to help solve problems. In truth, if it were not for anger there would be many times that we do not even know that something is wrong and needs fixing.

One way you can see if your anger is under control is by looking at the way you feel and act when you are getting angry. If you can be careful about what you say when angry, and are not tense or anxious inside you can suppose that your anger is controlled.

However, if when you are angry you only recognize what you said after you had said it, then you need to fix this area because you can cause more trouble for yourself.

You can control your anger in many ways. If you are going to do it, you need to know that there are quite a bit of tools available to help you. All you will need to do is sort them and use the ones that are best for your needs.

The first two things you want to do when controlling your anger is first, understand when you are starting to get angry. The second thing you need to be able to do is quickly gather up your willpower when you do start to get mad and do something that calms you instead of letting your anger swell into rage.

Hold on a minute, excuse me, be right back, one second, one of these or a similar phrase can be used to get yourself out of a situation that is starting to turn hostile. All you need to do is say one of these things, then walk away and stay away until your anger has cooled off.

Walking away is like training wheels on a bicycle. You will only need to use this method until you get better at managing your anger. Once your anger management skills are improved you will be able to skip the walking away step and use another skill in its place.

Until then however, walking away and slowly counting to ten, twenty, or one hundred as the need may be, until you are calm will help you to keep the nasty effects from anger away.

Doing this has helped many people in the past. Please do not underestimate the power of this simple act to help. Use it, it will help you to.

When you start to think about long term solutions, let your starting place be taking the time everyday to relax yourself. Coming out of your anger problems will be more rapid if you take the time to treat yourself to time alone thinking about the things that satisfy you. Whether you believe it or not, this will take a lot of the bite out of your anger.

Get some help with managing your anger.

If you make up your mind to control your anger more speedily, I recommend that you do an anger management class. With eight weeks of training you will be managing your anger 20% better.
