If you live in New York, then you know being here on a summer weekend is no fun. Sure, a picnic in the park is nice, but don’t even think about going down to SoHo. You will be eaten alive in a sea of Europeans. If you want to get out of the city, here are some fun options.
Just drive north. It doesn’t matter where, the further you drive north, the more beautiful it gets. Find a little hotel on a placid lake in Connecticut, or stay at the Castle on the Hudson for a luxurious weekend vacation.
If you’ve never been to Fire Island, put it on your summer checklist. Every town in Fire Island has its own unique character, but they all have something in common: no cars. If it weren’t for the cell phones that people are on, you would think you are in the 1950s in Fire Island.
The Hamptons is another very popular destination for many New Yorkers.
Some of the best areas to go out east include East Hampton, Amagansett and Sag Harbor. All are about a one hour to one and a half hour drive from Manhattan without traffic.
If you are looking to go to Long Island, but the Hamptons aren’t your scene, look into the North Fork of Long Island. Towns like Greenpoint and Orient point are wonderful weekend destinations. The wine out there is excellent, as are the baked goods at Briermeir farm.
Cape Cod makes for a great holiday weekend getaway. It’s about a 3 hour long drive, but well worth it. The Lobster Rolls alone are worth the trip to me!

If you are a fan of college basketball, then you probably have taken notice of the Vanderbilt Commodores over the past few years. With 3 tournament appearances and two Sweet 16 appearances, this team has had its highs (in addition to many lows).
Sure I am biased because I went to school there, but this team has had some incredible wins in recent years. Here are the top 5.
In 2008, for a brief period, the Tennessee Volunteers were ranked as the number one team in the country. Their reign lasted a whole two days and was brought to a sudden end by Vanderbilt. On national television. Some title reign that was.
In 2007, for a long period of time, the Florida Gators were the kings of college basketball. They were coming off a national championship and were undefeated up until this game. Vanderbilt outplayed them and managed to win in a great game.
Even though I hated them at the time, the Gators were an incredible team. Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer and Taurean Green were all on this team.
Vanderbilt was a hot ticket coming into the NCAAB Tournament in 2007. They were led behind senior Derek Byars and Shan Foster. Both players played exceptionally well and were able to beat out a great Washington State Cougars team. This was one game where neither team deserved to lose.
Also in 2007, in the last home game of the season (and his last as a Commodore), Shan Foster went off. The guy was hitting 35 foot 3 pointers with hands in his face and willed his team to victory. It solidified Vandy’s undefeated home record for the year.
Another great game was against Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament, back in 2003. Mississippi State was heavily favored, but Dan Cage stepped up from the 3 point line when he needed to and allowed Vandy to win in double overtime.
Aside from Vanderbilt sports, the author also frequently gives advice regarding exterior paints and stucco paint.

Employers won’t waste their time contacting people for interviews if they are not impressed by your resume. If you have been submitting your resume daily for a while and are not getting responses, maybe it’s time to take a look at your resume and make some changes.
The content of your resume is what decides whether or not an employer contacts you. You need to make sure you are putting the right stuff in your resume. What kind of stuff should be put in your resume to make sure that happens?
The objective is what employers first look at. While some employers may find the objective to be a clich for some professionals, the objective can be crucial for recent graduates, entry level positions, and changing fields of work. The objective is usually a few lines about what you hope to accomplish if they were to hire you.
Include your employment history for no more than the past three to five years. Also, don’t include information that is irrelevant to the job you are applying for.
Have your previous employment accomplishments ready in case an employer tries to find some weak points from any of your previous employers. Don’t be afraid to build yourself up.
Include your education background and any other proficiencies and qualifications you may have. Make sure to include personal information that is relevant to the position and include any accomplishments you had throughout your high school and college career
Be sure to include any extracurricular activities as well. You don’t need to be shy when writing out your qualifications, proficiencies, trainings, or seminars you have attended. Also, certifications are a bonus.
Finally, your personal description should be kept short, keep to relevant details only. Your physical description is generally unnecessary.

Self-esteem is an important factor in any person’s life, and it is often shaped by adults. If you are a parent, it is important to bestow value and self-worth onto your child consistently, starting at a young age. These feelings usually transfer well into adulthood, and help your child thrive.
Many children whom have excellent levels of self-esteem will be able to try new things easier and quicker than other children who have lower levels. This is because that child believes they are capable of anything they put their mind to. This little thought can actually go quite a long way. Many successful individuals will admit that the reason for their results was courtesy of their parents’ actions – always telling them they could do anything they desired.
Perhaps the greatest technique to use when it comes to building self-esteem is providing unconditional love. Your child should be assured and know deep down that you will always love them regardless of what they ever do, think, or say.
Of course, you need to discipline them and let them know whether their actions have been bad, so long as they know that you are angry about the action, not them, so rather than saying, “why are you always so mean to your brother?” say “you should share your toys with your brother more.”
Your kids also have to understand you are always interested in them. If they don’t, then they will feel unimportant and unloved.
When a child asks a question, make sure to give them your full attention. It’s also important not to belittle any thoughts or ideas that your child shares with you, and acknowledge your child’s feelings when they share them with your.
It’s all about positive reinforcement and how you can get your child to believe that he is great for certain reasons and that other people will believe that if he does himself. This is usually the trick for anyone with low self-esteem. The more confidence you have in yourself, the more that will be displayed to others and the more it will be evident to them in the long run.
It’s important to always notice the good things your child does, and comment on them. While you should always make sure that you are being sincere, finding even little things that your child does well and giving them a sincere compliment can give their self-esteem a big boost. It’s also important to be specific in your compliments, such as saying “Thank you for putting away all your toys before going to bed,” instead of just saying “Good job.

We keep discovering benefits from evolving technology thanks to the internet every single day. One of the most impressive advancements in online communication has been the ability to see the world through our computer screens. This gives us access to anywhere in the world, almost like being there ourselves.
This seemed impossible even twenty years ago. Today, through internet access virtually everywhere, we are able to visit anywhere whenever we feel like getting online.
Google brings the world, free of charge, to our fingertips through two powerful programs. Google Earth and Street View. Both can be viewed in map style, in addition to a ground level perspective. Through these innovative interfaces, anyone can visit anywhere in the world. With the click of a mouse, discovering places or re-visiting others are possible.
Due to the amazing versatility and evolving technology of the internet, we can even visit somewhere before actually going there.
These programs are powerful and easy to use, but they can get outdated quickly, and they don’t show real time images. Luckily, webcam technology has filled in the gap and provides viewers with live and real time feeds from locations all over the world. These cameras have made it possible for web surfers to see their world come alive.
One small limitation to live webcams is that they can be hard to search for. Out of the generosity of time and interest, some web surfers have put together webcam directories. Thanks to their efforts, many webcam feeds have been organized and categorized for us to enjoy.
Going to a webcam directory makes it easy to look for particular feeds of interest. Many webcams are in places otherwise difficult to get to in person, and give us a window to the world we are just discovering. Webcams can be found anywhere on the planet. In fact, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland was visible through webcams as it erupted.
There’s a whole new world out there to discover and learn about through live webcam feeds. Next time you think you’ve seen it all, go to a webcam directory and see something new for the first time.

Being a postman has its ups and downs. That’s not all that surprising, no job is perfect of course.
On the down side, you have to wake up very early to get going on your route. Plus, you have to go out in the cold.
The positive side, though, outweighs this. You don’t have to be a scholar to be a mail carrier. You won’t have to spend years in college and a fortune in tuition to have this good job.
A driver’s license will help you get the job, but it is not a requirement. If you are hired as a mail carrier you may be able to deliver on foot or on a bike. You may also get a job sorting mail.
Don’t be discouraged if you start out with minimum wage. This isn’t uncommon, but you will get many raises as you have more experience, time in position, and responsibility.
You can definitely make a decent living as a postal supervisor or manager. When you reach this level you can expect a lot of responsibility like scheduling and organizing teams, delegating duties, doing routes, and the like.
There really aren’t any perks to the job. Some people expect that they will get free postage and then are disappointed. There is no free postage for postal workers. Postal workers are given uniforms though, so you won’t have to worry about using your own clothing at work. You will have different clothes for all kinds of weather since you are going to be out in all climates.
Postal workers generally work every day of the week except Sunday. If there is a bank holiday, they have that day off also. Some periods they may have a busy time, like during tax time with people mailing in returns, or during the Christmas holiday season. Postal workers are expected to work extra shifts during these periods so that mail gets delivered on time despite increased volume.
It’s a great job. The post office is an excellent employer and you will have steady work performing a meaningful service.
Some people worry that postal jobs will dwindle because of email making people mail fewer letters. This isn’t the case. Yes, people use email. But they also do online shopping now, so have to get packages in the mail they otherwise would have gone and picked up in person. There will be postal jobs for plenty of years to come.

5. Joking around
A little bit of comedy can do wonder to lift the anxiety, or worse dullness when putting your speech together. That way, you’ll get the attention of the majority of the crowd and they’ll feel that you’re just as amicable, and as human to those who pay attention.
6. Be like the rest of them
Communication is all about mixing with the public. You’ll get several ideas, as well as identifying what people make them as they are.
7. Me, I, and Myself
Acknowledge it, there are times you sing to yourself in the bathroom. I know I do! Listening to the sound of your own voice while you practice your speech in front of a mirror can help correct the stress areas of your pitch. And while you’re at it you can improve as well.
8. With a grin
A smile says it all much like eye contact. There’s no point on grimacing or frowning in a meeting or a gathering, unless it’s a wake. You can better express what you’re saying when you smile.
9. A Model
At least there must be one or two personalities in your life you have paid attention to when they’re at a public gathering or maybe at cathedral. Definitely they read their lines, but taking a mental note of how they lay emphasis on what they say can assist you once you take center stage.
10. Groundwork
Some people like to note things down on index cards, whereas other resort to being a little more silly as they look at their notes written on the palm of their hand (not for sticky hands, right?). Just be at ease with what you know given that you enjoy your work. Make the best out of preparation rather than just scribbling notes and often in a hasty fright.
And that about wraps it up. These suggestions are rather amateurish in edgewise, but I’ve learned to empower myself when it comes to public or private speaking and it never hurts to be with people to listen how they make conversations and meetings far more enjoyable as well as educational.

Parent Teacher Night is a unique opportunity for parents and teachers to get to know each other and form a tight team to better help the students. Make sure you take advantage of this particular event!
Teachers will benefit from the following checklist of ways to prepare for the Parent Teacher Night.
First, have your credentials, particularly any awards and certificates, in a visible place. This is no time to be modest!
You have probably seen the credentials of doctors and dentists displayed on their walls, so why wouldn’t you display yours? This is not bragging. The parents will feel more confident in you knowing your credentials.
Teachers should always be prepared to give parents a quick run-down of their training, background, and experience. The parents are trusting you to educate their children, and they will want to know that you are up to the task.
It’s important to stick to the main points that qualify you to teach their children. Leave out any little details that don’t position you as an expert, as you will have little time to speak to each parent and will want to use your time as wisely as possible.
Don’t forget about the importance of technology! In this day and age, many parents rely on you to teach their children to survive in a technical world. They will likely expect their children to come home with a better understanding of daily technology then the parents have. It is critical that you are both capable of using the technology yourself and capable of teaching their children to survive in today’s technical world.
Once the parents know that you are confident, qualified, and passionate, they’ll leave the evening proud to have you teach their kids!

While the majority of us think that a university degree will advance us in our chosen careers, there are some who still think you should get there through hard work and not because of a piece of paper. Here we have a few comparisons between university and community college educations.
One of the main, and very obvious advantages, is that you have the possibility of higher earnings in the future. While there is nothing in this world that guarantees you will be employed in your chosen field, the fact remains that if you are lucky enough to be, your potential earnings are greatly increased.
One of the big attractions of going to a university is that you will be leaving home, living on campus and embracing the whole college lifestyle. This is the experience of a lifetime, which, sadly, community college students miss out on.
This plays a big part in deciding to go to a university instead of a community college. The chance to live with others of the same age and be independent is inspiring. This is the making of a lot of kids, and the time when they become adults.
Another plus from going to university is the diversity of your fellow students. There could be people on your lecture from many different nations, all bringing their culture into the mix.
The only community colleges that have anywhere near this kind of diversity are the ones in the larger, multi-ethnic cities. Like New York for example.
By mixing with students from different backgrounds to your own, you get the opportunity to experience different cultures. This is often lacking from community colleges as the students will most likely be locals as opposed to a range of cultures.
Another thing you’ll be missing out on by attending your local community college is the opportunity to experience the arts programs that the universities take great pride in. Going to a concert or to the theater with your fellow students is a big part of student life, so don’t miss out on it.

As all of us know, reading is one of the golden habits as it can help develop your child’s creativity and also broaden their horizons. This is one habit that you would definitely want to instill in your child.
If you want to teach your child to read or to help them pick up this skill when they start learning at school or kindergarten, the most important resources that you need are time and patience.
When a child first learns to read, it is hard because the text is a series of disjointed letters that, when they are put together, hardly sound like words. To hold their interest at this time is difficult, and it therefore requires much patience as the child repeats the letters slowly.
When you are introducing your child to the world of books, ensure that their first books are beautiful, well illustrated and colorful. The font used in the books should be large and easy to follow. This will make the book easy to read and therefore hold the child’s interest.
Don’t force the child to “run before they can walk” either. Take it step by step, until the child has built up each stage of their reading skills.
Don’t make the activity into a dull chore that the child might abhor after a few days. If the child is tired or unwilling at any time, don’t push. Try again later. It’s better if you try only a few words at a time.
Children are bound to make mistakes while still in the beginning stages of developing this skill. Try not to discourage them by interrupting them again and again, demeaning, or comparing them with other children. Read along with them so that they can learn the right pronunciation and diction of the words. It is a good idea to repeat the difficult words again and again.
In time, hopefully, your child will become an accomplished reader. It takes kids different periods of time to “get it,” so make sure that you don’t put too much pressure on them. The last thing you want to do is create a negative situation among you and your children.
