The 6 Characteristics Of Good Marketers

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

I had a column open on TweetDeck yesterday for a search term and the following Tweet came up (I’m paraphrasing) “Let me teach you marketing and make money from Twitter. Just set it and forget it! Click here.” Guys like these give Twitter, and more injuriously, Marketing a bad name. There is simply no such thing as “set it and forget it” marketing

Many small business owners who feel uncomfortable with marketing, or who don’t have the time to devote to marketing their business, often look to hire an employee or retain a marketing consulting firm to help them. There is frequently a concern on the part of the business owner that the marketing person is not getting the needed results fast enough.

You may wonder and ask about putting all the marketing eggs in one basket: If email marketing is working, why don’t we quit attending events and just send out more email? If we aren’t getting any leads from direct mail, why don’t we quit mailing and spend that money on SEO? Or, yes, our direct mail is working, but do we have to send it out every month? Could we go every 6 weeks?

Small business owners may find themselves a bit hesitant when the marketing person approaches them with something new. A different visual or written approach to your materials might be just what you’ve always wanted or it might seem disconcerting.

Business owners, you are going to have to learn to trust your marketing people. I believe that if they are displaying the 6 characteristics below, you can relax. In fact, you can celebrate.

They should display a curiosity about the business. Good marketing people are curious. They are constantly looking to learn more about everything you do; the products, the services, the customers, the competition. They love to dive into the contextual aspects of how and where your products and services play within the market. Their brains are always looking to translate this domain knowledge into a more compelling message. When they are asking questions and digging for this kind of information, it’s a very good sign.

Consistent – Marketing people have been schooled on the necessity of consistency. They know the formidable challenge of your brand becoming top of mind with your target market. They know that there is a difference between frequency and spamming. They know that you can’t start a blog, post 3 or 4 articles, return a few months later, blow off the dust, and make another post. Consistent doesn’t mean uniform – so they will want to change up the look and feel from time to time to see if their consistent effort can engage in a new way and get better results.

Good marketing people are results oriented. They watch key metrics to ensure the marketing plan is hitting on all cylinders. They will monitor hits to website and responses to campaigns. They watch to see what works and what doesn’t work and examine the possible reasons why. They will test and refine. They will track how many raw leads are generated. They will calculate the number of raw leads that become quality leads and the percentage of quality leads that result in closed business.

Experimental – Good marketers are willing to experiment with new marketing channels, or to restore marketing efforts that previously had become tired. For example, maybe your company dabbled with webinars and didn’t see good results. When there is time to revisit and re-evaluate, good marketers like to take a fresh look at an old effort. Perhaps the content was less than compelling. Perhaps the title was unattractive – or failed to address what the attendee was looking to learn or solve. Good marketers are keeping tabs on things like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and how B2B are employing those platforms.

Good marketers look for ways to make marketing fun for the recipient. Some of the most successful B2C and B2B campaigns have been those that invite the prospect to have a little bit of fun with the marketing piece or message. Sometimes the fun factor can cause a marketing campaign to go viral and enjoy an unexpected reach when recipients share with their networks.

Good marketing people are open. They are willing to answer the business owner’s questions about the marketing strategy, plan and effectiveness without becoming defensive. When asked a question they don’t know the answer to, they are open to researching, and testing if necessary, to get the answer. In fact, they welcome the chance to share their findings with the business owners.

The Rules Of Creating Instant Success

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Who wants to find out how to be a great success in business? It’s a matter of knowing the insider secrets of creating a powerful business model built around the needs of your client. Is it a secret? Perhaps to some but the principles are well known. The All Heart business model is a solid set of buisness principles that pay off over time.

Here’s The Rules Of Success:

Rule #1: Pay attention to your clients and not your competitors as your clients will tell you what you need to do to be successful. If you are not offering the right products, your clients will go elsewhere. So, the question is, what does the client want? Well, first thing, is to realize how your client makes money and create services that help them make money. Don’t spy on your competitors. You want to creating your own products and services so you can truly understand your market place. If you are too focused on what others are doing you may miss opportunities to create top notch products of your very own. Remember to trust yourself.

Most people prefer to work with the bigger name brands for the confidence factor. They believe that the name brand will deliver better, more reliable and consistent results for them. People have a tendency to choose to work with firms that fill us with confidence. Think about the image and branding the car companies have. Each brand carries an x factor, the branding factor, that gives people a feeling of wanting to work with or buy from the company or not. People have more confidence in companies they have heard of in the media or throughout their activities.

Rule #3: Provide services that have a defined set of deliverables. If I by X, I get what? If you know your market and how it works, you will know how the products and services play out in the marketplace. Does the way your services work out in the marketplace deliver the outcome your client wants. If you do not have non-stop clients trying to hire you, then the answer is no. So, your job is to simply create one. Know what outcome your service or products provide your clients. Next, how do they use them to get their desired outcomes.

Rule #4: Strive to be the best in your industry. Why not? Many times it does not take much to excel. Many times the clients decision has to do with branding, price and certainty. Make a guarantee part of your offer. Its a great way to instill confidence in the buyer as usually, only those who will never need to honor the guarantee, offer it. That is, businesses create top notch services and then offer a guarantee they will never need to honor as the products are strong and inherently deliverable.

Leadership: Lead By Example In Management To Be Successful

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Since business began managers have been trying to perfect their skills. There are several topics, which will be discussed here, that if avoided will keep you safe. These pitfalls will spin your career out of control. If you find yourself violating these simple rules you will certainly pay the price and may even be eliminated.

Do you expect your workers to be on time? Of course you do. So you better be on time or even early yourself. The last thing you want to do is establish a double standard where you expect them to be on time but it is acceptable for you because you’re the boss. Your employees don’t see it this way. Get to work early and it will be like you never left when your employees get to work.

Don’t get caught up in a scandal at work. Scandals have brought down many great leaders. Unfortunately personal issues are combined with work or work personnel creating an unhealthy work environment. If you’re in the middle of a work scandal, it should only be because you are trying to solve the issue between other employees. Affairs, dating, crime and inappropriate conduct or relationships all fall into this category.

You have full control of this next tip. Be a leader where you always lead by example. If you wouldn’t do it yourself, why in the world would you ask someone else to do the same thing? This is called a double standard. Employees have a hard time processing why your standard is different from theirs. You may say well I’m the boss. Try this out and you will see why it is so important.

The next tip is probably one of the toughest. Your integrity is at stake. Your boss has asked you to carry out an order which you deem inappropriate, immoral, illegal etc. You want to please your boss but you know you will never be able to sell this to your employee. In fact, you know it is absolutely wrong. Make the choice now to protect your integrity. You can say no. Yes. You may get fired but it is the right thing to do. You should pay close attention if your actions would bring on an onslaught of legal issues. Even though your boss told you to do it, you may still be held liable.

In the end, you have a choice to accept the challenge of carrying out such a dastardly deed or simply saying no. If you say no, you may be fired. But, it could go the other way and you may also gain some respect from your boss. You do have a choice.

The last biggie is attitude. Muster up a good attitude every day and it will carry you a long way. Fight the distractions that take you away from getting your job done. Keep measuring what you have and bounce that off of what you need to do. Making an assessment everyday is the key to catching areas needing attention.

Put you best foot forward every day. Do not compromise what you know a good leader to be. Do what is right day in and day out. Respect must be earned it is not something you get when you pick up your ID badge. Avoid the pitfalls discussed in this article and you will have a better chance at a long productive career as a manager.

Business Telephone Systems

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Making the right choice when choosing a telephone system is a big decision for your business. There are some important considerations to keep in mind as you shop for a new system.

Capacity – For a business that is growing you will want to ensure you have the capacity in your telephone system to cover any future growth. The majority of telephone systems can cover 12 incoming lines and 24 extensions at their limit. For a small entry level telephone system you need to bear in mind that the parts will not be transferable to larger models, with this in mind you need to make sure the system you buy will be able to grow with your business.

Direct Lines – For any business that will need direct lines for their staff you will need to make sure you get an ISDN compatible system. This allows you to use direct dialing and see caller ID, the primary number will be shown no matter what line is picked up or for transferred calls. ISDN is available in almost every country.

Voicemail – With a direct line service you will often be able to get voicemail for each telephone handset in the office, for some systems you may be able to have more than simple voicemails, such as the ability to forward messages by email or simply to other phones. You will also want to make sure the voicemail capacity is enough to handle the amount of messages, and length of messages, you expect to get.

The Handset – Another thing to consider is which handsets you wish to use with your new system. Each system will undoubtedly come with standard handsets, although you will be able to pay more for upgrades. You may be able to make do with the standard options but if you want more features or better quality and more stylish handsets you will need to pay more. It may be worth looking into an upgrade because you will be using these handsets for some time and with a greater amount of features it could make things a lot easier, or you may wish simply to have handsets that look more stylish within your business offices.

Installation – Once you have decided what system you wish to go for, all that is left is to have it installed. The company you buy the system from will doubtless offer an installation service but they may not necessarily be the best option. You can get a different service to install the system if you wish who may be more adept at installing it to your requirements. There is no point spending money on a new telephone system only to have it installed in a half hearted manner. Ensuring it is installed properly and that the connections create a high quality line to talk on is important.

Business Telephone Systems – Do You Need One?

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Purchasing the right telephone system for your company involves some important decisions as that telephone system will be used to forge the close links between your business and your clients. Should you make a poor decision and purchase the wrong phone system, it could harm your business by impeding your communications with your clients. To purchase the right system you need to spend a little time understanding what it is you need in a telephone to find the one that best suits your needs. Here are some points to consider before buying:

- What is your call volume now and is that volume likely to grow?

- Does the system that you buy need to be compatible with any existing equipment or software that you use?

- Are you looking for a phone system that offers some specific functions?

You also need to estimate how many trunks and extensions you need. Outside lines are called trunks and extensions are number of handsets, modems or fax machines you want to attach to your telephone system. The number of extensions you in your system needs to be higher than the number of trunks. The reason being that as calls are made a telephone system will allocate an outside line for that call. If you have fewer extensions than trunks you will run into problem as clients will find that your phones are constantly busy when they try calling you.

If you are not sure what telephone system you need then you should contact a representative from a business telephone system supplier. The number of suppliers has grown dramatically in recent years, which is a good thing, but it can also mean that the vast number of options available become daunting. Bear in mind these points when considering which supplier to sign up with:

- What are credentials of the company and do they have reputation of providing a good service?

- What does this supplier provide? Will you get a complete package that includes all cabling and hardware?

- How much will the new system cost you in support and maintenance?

- Will training for the new system be provided and is it free or is there a fee and, if so, what will it cost?

Take the time to communicate with several suppliers. Most suppliers will offer demonstrations of their systems and features and may also be willing to negotiate on prices. You will also get a better idea of the kind of support the company will offer, should you choose to buy from them, and the company may be able to suggest options and features that will be of value to your company.

Online Faxing Is An Essential Bridge Between Eras

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

People who work in science and technology know that everything is tentative, that all inventions are just stops along the way in a continuum of evolutionary activity. Communication between distant points, which began with smoke signals and progressed through the Pony Express and railroads to the telegraph and today’s mobile devices, will be evolving as long as there are people who want to communicate. Importantly, some technologies act as bridges between eras, allowing a stable and secure transition from one paradigm to another. Some of the bridges last a long time. For example, although cell phones can easily (and, now, economically) replace land lines for most people, both individuals and businesses still rely on land lines, sometimes “just in case.” There is no telling when this will change. We will have to wait and see.

The same is true for faxing. Although some people will tell you that e-mail, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and other methods make faxing obsolete, people continue to use fax machines and online fax services. The reason is simple. There are still situations in which faxes can save the day and perform when other protocols fail. Fax technology, both physical and virtual, is an important bridge between techno-eras, and will be around as long as there are reasons for a solid, reliable backup plan. This could be a long time, too, given the inherent weaknesses of the Internet as a basic communications infrastructure.

Phone lines vs. Internet

In case you missed the news, the U.S. government, through the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission, is still trying to gain for itself a controlling interest in the Internet. When we consider how successfully the government has managed other things, this should scare the heck out of everybody who wants a truly neutral net. So-called net neutrality schemes, in fact, would make the Internet less dependable, not more, as it will be subject to political infighting and manipulations. That is only the first of several problems.

Another problem is downtime. This can be the result of hackers, slackers or hijackers, as well as server malfunctions, power outages both regional and local, and other things. The point is, if you are still using the bridge technology of faxing, you are prepared for these occurrences. Smart companies will not only have online fax accounts to reach all the tens of millions of fax machines in the U.S. (perhaps hundreds of millions worldwide), they will also keep a modern, well-functioning fax machine onsite in case of Internet downtime. Even with the net down, they will be able to reach, and be reached by, all those fax machines. That’s a good backup plan, don’t you think? It’s realistic, too.

Mature technology

One of the reasons that people continue to rely on faxing, online and phone-line styles both, is that the technology is mature. This means that it is dependable and predictable, and that you can rely on it working without a second thought. Even in the Western countries that are leading the way with new technology (Internet, mobile, wireless, broadband, etc.) it is important to gauge the maturity, reach and effectiveness of one’s communications methods. Faxing is stable and prone to very few errors or outages. Consider: How many times has your computer or network crashed or had problems in, say, the last year? In that time, how many times did your phone line go out?

Fact is, phone lines are on a different power grid than your other electrical devices, and phones (and, therefore, fax machines) keep operating. If you really want to plan for an apocalyptic situation, you would simply get a small generator or two to power a few office devices. You could then stay in touch with phones and faxes while everyone else waits for the power to come back on for the Web. Although this is probably not something you need to plan for (Armageddon, that is), it is nice to know that you have technologies that can work for you during tough times. By the way, there are also fax machines that can run on batteries as well as external, portable power supplies.

Office planning

Forget the apocalypse, forget the downtime scenarios, and just consider what a good and thorough communications strategy would be. In addition to e-mail and mobile devices, having online faxing and a backup fax machine simply means you have more ways to reach more people. Overseas, particularly in parts of Asia and most of Africa, there are far more fax machines being used per capita than in the U.S. This is because the Internet infrastructure has not penetrated as much as in the West, and because the phone lines, though not the best, are mature and have been working for years. When you see a business card from Ghana, for example, you will always find a fax number on it.

Bottom line: Faxing is a bridge technology that connects the past with both the present and the future. When you really need to ensure being able to communicate, you should use every available resource. Online faxing and fax machines definitely have an important role to play, and will for some time to come.

Is Your Office Cell Phone Technique Scaring Away Your Clients?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Your current cellular phone technique may have been fine when you very first started your small business and there were just 1 or two of you within the workplace. But if you’ve grown, then you are probably already aware that it is advisable to upgrade your process. A complete new method will price you a huge number of dollars and, just like any technologies these days, it will be outdated within just a couple of many years and you’ll have to replace it again.

The improved solution is to rent your workplace telephone program and as technological innovation improves or your small business needs grow it is possible to upgrade your system whenever you want. And as opposed to investing thousands of dollars in a method you know is eventually going to depreciate, you can usually possess a technique that meets all of your wants for one particular, low monthly payment.

Have you taken a long, tough look at your office cellular phone method lately? Oftentimes, when business are seeing a slump in sales or profitability, they’ll hire a consultant to come in and analyze their enterprise and 1 with the very first things a consultant will look at is your phone program. We live in an age of instant gratification and when your customers try to contact you by cell phone they want answers now. If you are not seeing the sales or profits you think you need to be then it could be your outdated workplace mobile phone technique.

Before you even seem at what kind of process you’re currently utilizing, ask yourself this question – “How numerous times does your phone ring previous to somebody answers it?” The typical first-time client will only let the cellular phone ring 5 times before he hangs up and tries the subsequent number on the list. If you are not close enough to your cellular phone to get able to answer it by the third ring then you have to take a appear at your mobile phone system.

In today’s economy, most small enterprise don’t have extra funds laying around to spend on technological know-how that’s only planning to become outdated within the up coming 2 years. Yet your cellular phone program is one in the most essential assets your company has. It’s usually the only way numerous of one’s clients will ever contact you and if they don’t get a great first impression of one’s business more than the cellular phone you may possibly never make the sale.

For instance, primary time callers don’t desire to wait 5 or 6 rings for you to get to a telephone and they don’t want you being out of breath whenever you do answer. Investigation has shown that to make a good very first impression your enterprise telephone need to be answered in no far more than 3 rings. Do you possess a mobile phone near where you’re working or do you still will need to create a mad dash across the shop each time it rings and hope you get there just before that consumer hangs up?

One in the main reasons that men and women lease their cars is so that every 2 many years or so they can get a newer, much better model without the expense of having to pay full price for something that’s only likely to depreciate in value. Why not look at doing the same thing with your business office cellular phone method?

Do you have a cordless phone system in your workplace? If not, you really need to consider it. Research has shown that when a new client calls they expect the cellular phone to get answered in much less than 5 rings. If you are the only one particular within your office and the mobile phone is located on the other side of the building, chances are you are missing numerous calls per day from potential new clients.

But a new telephone method can cost a large number of bucks. And just like any other piece of technological innovation it is likely to be outdated in just a couple of many years. Not to mention the fact that your organization requires are going to change over time, too. So how do you stay ahead of you phone requirements with out breaking the bank?

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your small business cellular phone process you may be searching for a conferencing cellular phone, additional phones for new salespeople, or even wireless phones and headsets for members of this staff. All of this added equipment costs thousands of bucks when purchased outright and as your enterprise grows and technological know-how changes it gradually becomes worth much less and less.

But it is possible to rent it for a fraction on the charge and upgrade it as frequently as you like. Just like you do your new car. As your company grows and you should add additional phones or more sophisticated equipment you just upgrade your rental agreement.

If your small business mobile phone program is no longer taking care of all of this wants then it is time to upgrade. Instead of making that huge investment in technologies that’s only going to be outdated a year from now, rent your business office telephone program and constantly be accessible when that up coming client calls.

Improving Customers Service With An “Old Fashion” Phone Call

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Pretty much everything is automated these days right? The ATM, bill payment services; even the library has an automated calling program to tell us our books are in. So many customers have become used to the lack of personal attention. I have noticed it and quite frankly, I don’t like it. I can not imagine I am the only one! That being said, we have made the decision in our companies to personalize our services. We take the time to contact our customers with a personal telephone call. The response has been amazing! Here are some reasons to make a personal phone call:

Welcome customers to your company, service, etc.

Thank them for their business

Answer their questions. Do they understand what they are paying for?

Invite them into your store to use a special coupon or take advantage of a special sale.

Re-commitment

I can tell your from personal experience that a company who takes the time to contact their customers personally and goes that extra mile, cause it’s customer to stand and take notice. It builds loyalty. It helps them to form a connection to you the more times you speak with them. Some of my customers have even come to feel like they know me. They look forward to coming to my stores or calling in with questions because we can “catch up.”

If you utilize your courtesy phone calls to recommit a customer who has not done business with you in awhile; again, you build loyalty. You will cause your customers to feel like you have noticed that they have not been around. If you have not seen a customer in awhile, why not give them a call? You may find that there was a minor issue or problem that you can easily fix. Many times if a customer has a problem, you will never even know about it. People don’t like to complain. However, I LOVE to hear my customer’s complaints. So many times they are an easy fix. So many times, a customer just wants you to validate that their opinions are important, even if you cannot make the changes that they desire. With courtesy phone calls and that personalized attention, your customers won’t have to wonder; they will know that they are important to you. When your customers know that you value their business, you will listen to their opinions and you miss them when they are gone, you build loyalty like no other. You make customers for life.
