My company is related to computer designing and programming and I am John: the owner and manager. So what we are doing mostly are software designing. The contracts we are getting are high end kind of. To give a good example would be the one we did for the city: a surveillance software. Twelve months of hard work was necessarily to finish it. And so many hours including the overtime. The current contracts we are getting are not as important though.
My staff has five programmers. They are all well versed in computer programming. We do offer projects for Linux, Windows and Mac. Two of my programmers are part-time students and I usually made them work on the weekend. They are also the ones doing overtime the evenings. Our current project is related to some portal services. The customer wants a full portal with plenty of choices. Since we started, there have been lots of modifications. This customer is very picky.
In our workplace, only the best computers are used. We have top notch printers and office equipments too. All our programmers are using the iPAQ 4155. This pocket tool is great to keep notes about the current tasks and the project schedule. To communicate between ourselves is very easy with this little gadget. Everyday, my programmers had to be updated on any project changes. Let’s say one of them becomes sick…. well, the others need to be fully working as soon as possible without delay.
Last year, my main and best programmer got sick. He had to stay home for the project for the last 2 weeks kind of. So the product was almost ready to be shipped and we were doing every possible effort to finish it rightly. Thanks to my programmer, even sick he was able to guide us in some code details we needed then. Never such a problem happened before. I do make sure, of course, that each piece of code is more than commented. What happened is that we were so tight on the schedule, we could not simply review everything. The customer was a bit impatient and I could but wish then to deliver quickly. Since then I made sure my programmers are more than ready to handle such problems.
I founded that small venture five years ago. I started it small then grow up big enough to handle bigger projects. Our past customers are the main ones giving us more and more contracts. As any good manager I have to keep in touch with my clients, either for business contact or, of course, for anything they need to know on their project status. The office place is downtown. We are next to the business part. My company has a good location. I love to work here. This is a great job and I do enjoy it a lot !
