Cellular phone smiles or most commonly called emoticons are all around us. We see them on the internet, on our phones and even in ads. Of course there are many different smiley faces which can express every possible mood or condition you can think of. For instance some of the most commonly used are:
,
,
– Happy
,
– Sad :@ – Angry
,
- Confused :X – No words/comment And there are hundreds of more which you can easily find by searching for “emoticons” on the internet or just by giving your imagination a chance to create.
Young and old use smiley faces when writing text messages through their phone. The use of cellular phone smiles not only allows you to express your condition or mood better, but it also saves time and symbols. An example for that is “TT”. “TT” is the emoticon for crying if you can’t see it from the first look then notice that the horizontal lines represent two eyes while the vertical ones tears. So instead of typing “I am crying” you can easily just write “TT”. It will surprise many of you that emoticons have been first used in the 19th century in a speech of president Lincoln. However this cannot be proved, because no-one can decide if it was a typing mistake or made on purpose.
Depending on your cellular phone you may not have to create your own smiley faces or search for them on the internet. There may be an application for your phone which will list smiles and let you type an emoticon just by choosing it. However if you are a bit more experienced you will notice that it is much easier for you to type the emoticons manually than to choose them from a list.
Many people think that emoticons and smiley faces are the same thing, but this is not true. Smiley faces are the faces created with the use symbols, letters and numbers. The emoticon is not a combination of symbols, but instead it is an entire image which is used mainly for websites and chat programs. An example of the emoticons is found in some versions of the Microsoft application Microsoft Word. In some of those versions the smiley face
is replaced by a happy face when typed. On the internet more and more websites and forums replace the old smiley faces with newer emoticons when they’re typed.
Phones are not left behind the developing of chat applications and websites. Most of the new model mobile phones have integrated applications to them which convert a typed smiley face in an emoticon. However you may turn on and off that feature depending on what you like the most. Smiley faces are a much needed feature in today’s messaging applications, because they allow you to show the other person your condition and mood in a much better and clearer way.
