The Impressive BlackBerry Torch

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The Torch is a recently released Blackberry phone which was designed to be more competitive in a modern smartphone market. In order to better compete with the iPhone and a variety of Android hardware, The device sports a variety of new features, both hardware and software. It has a lot of firsts for BlackBerry, although not so much for other Android phones.

On the software side, it runs BlackBerry’s new OS 6. This updated OS is designed specifically to compete against the other Android phones. It has an updates Webkit based browser, which runs much better than any of the previous versions. Older versions of BlackBerry’s browser were clearly mobile browsers, because of their limited functionality and slow speeds. Android, on the other hand, ran a browser as easily as any desktop computer. The new browser really helps them catch up to that. The phone also supports a unique navigation scheme. The large icons on the phone’s homescreen make it easy to navigate the different part of the phone, and it’s all customizable.

Hardware-wise, the Torch is clearly a BlackBerry phone. It is their first slider phone, but nevertheless still has a keyboard. Seeing how most Android phones are touchscreen based only, that makes the phone a bit unique.. It also bears resemblance to many previous BlackBerry phones, with its slightly oval design, whereas many Android phones are designed to be a lot more box-y. Although the hardware isn’t completely unique, it’s nice to see people who prefer BlackBerry phones and still want to have Android based features.

The device is just like any Android or other smartphone in that it needs some accessories. Common types of accessories include screen protectors and cases. You will probably want to protect your device, to make sure it stays in good condition for a long time. After all, the typical life cycle of a device is two years, so you will want to make sure it lasts. Although the phone is a nice piece of hardware, it certainly isn’t indestructible, so you have to keep it safe and protected.

Overall the BlackBerry Torch is a nice device . Unfortunately, it’s still a tad bit difficult to point out what exactly makes this totally unique from most Android phones. Although this is an obvious attempt for BlackBerry to catch up with the times in terms of cel phone technology, it still hasn’t surpassed any of their competition. The phone has been Android-ized somewhat, but still bears many resemblances, both in hardware and software, to older Blackberry phones, and it hasn’t really excelled above Android phones in any way. That being said, the Torch is a good phone, and is well worth considering getting.

The Highly Anticipated Phone, The T-Mobile G2

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Samsung’s new Galaxy S series has been bringing high quality phones into the market, which are available to all major US carriers. Now T-Mobile is gaining the G2 in addition to the Galaxy S Vibrant. The new G2 combines nearly every good feature to the Galaxy S series phones.

The G2 phone has several great features that can be compared to the Galaxy S series. It faithfully delivers a 5-megapixel camera and full wireless capabilities (Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 b/g/n). Although most new phone have these features available, it’s still good to have the basics covered. The phone has 4 gigabytes of internal memory, more than the Epic 4G and Fascinate’s 2 gigabytes but short of the Captivate and Vibrant’s 16 gigabytes. It also features a microSD card slot expandable up to 32 gigabytes, matching the Captivate and outpacing other series phones. For prices, other Galaxy S phones range from $59 (Captivate) up to $649 (Epic 4G), but the G2’s price is still under wraps. Specific rates are heavily affected by the associated plan. Hopefully the phone will fall competitively into this range.

There are some minor drawbacks to the phone though. The phone is actually heavier than any other Galaxy S phone, but only by a single ounce (6.5 ounces versus the Epic 4G’s 5.5). The screen is 3.7 inches (diagonally), which is a surprise since every other Galaxy S phone is 4 inches. That’s not a huge difference, but some may dislike the decreased size. The last negative might be more significant. It has an 800-megahertz processor; all other series phones have a 1-gigahertz processor. The latter is almost expected for modern Android phones, so the slower processor is a bit perplexing. Numbers can mislead, so users may not notice or care about the difference.

The phone also offers some great features. It does have 4G, joining only the Epic 4G among series phones. Theoretical download speeds reach 14.4 mbps (as stated by T-Mobile), and practical speeds should be fast enough for nearly anyone. (Data coverage can be viewed at T-Mobile’s website.) Fans of Android will love this: the PDA phone is one of only a handful of phones shipping with Android 2.2 (Froyo), and it’s the only Galaxy S phone that has Froyo preinstalled. It will have Flash support and the most updated, efficient Android OS. The G2 also has a QWERTY keyboard, just like the Epic 4G (the only phone in the Galaxy S series that has this feature). Phone keyboards are a watershed issue, but for what it’s worth, those who have gotten a sneak peak of the phone claim that the keyboard is easy to use.

The Google phone continues a line of excellent phones, now offering two great Galaxy S options to T-Mobile customers. This is just an amazing phone for anyone, and it’s the perfect Galaxy S phone for those who want 4G, a physical keyboard, and the most up-to-date Android OS.

HTC And T-Mobile Partners Up To Bring You The T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Well known as a leader in the Android market, phone manufacturer, HTC, released one of the most successful Android phones for T-Mobile. The 3G Slide phone is a newer version of T-Mobile’s original MyTouch. The new phone features a slide out keyboard (where the phone gets part of its name from), a 600MHz processor and the 2.1 Android operating system. Beyond that, HTC has also provided several extra features to give this Android phone ahead of the pack of other Android smart phones.

The PDA phone and accessories appeared on the market in June to compete with the multitude of Android phones currently flooding the market from other providers. While it doesn’t have a high power processor and processing speed as its competitors, it does have a very effective voice to text command system known as Genius. It also boasts a MyModes feature which allow users to customize the overall look and feel of the OS, based on their preferences or the location. The Faves feature allow users to keep track of up to 20 friends through popular social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook.

As an entry level Android phone, the 3G Slide is hard to beat. The keyboard makes it an easy choice to many potential customers, whom are still new to touchscreen phones. The voice recognition is excellent, providing more convenience and more portability. The phone’s slightly larger 3.4″ screen is large enough for pleasant viewing, yet comfortable in the hand, not bulky like many of the competing devices. Even more important for an entry level phone, the call quality is excellent for the phone. Though phone calls seem to be the least of what Android phones are used for, they are still the primary function for those just getting into their first smartphone.

The phone is also very reasonably priced, currently running at around $180 after $50 mail-in rebate. There are also some added accessories that should be considered for those new to smartphones as well. One of the main concerns for any smartphone is battery life. While the smart phone has excellent battery life for a smartphone, a car charger is a must for making full use of the navigation and voice search features. Also necessary for any touchscreen phone, items such as a case and screen protector are very important buys for protecting the user’s investment.

Though the myTouch 3G Slide is not on first blush a bold step for T-Mobile, it still helps them to stay within the mix of the expanding Android market. While some technology junkies may be unimpressed with the 600MHz processing of this latest Android device, most users will be satisfied with the functionality and intuitive menus this phone has to offer. The design may not win awards in originality, but the first MyTouch was a very popular phone with few complaints about its look and feel. This upgraded phone should entice far more supporters than detractors for T-Mobile.

The T-Mobile G2 Compared To The Apple IPhone 4

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

The iPhone’s growing popularity has made it a great benchmark to compare to other smart phones in the market. That said, how does the T-Mobile G2 compare to the iPhone 4? Here are some of the differences to consider.

First and foremost, the operating system is obviously different from the system run on Apple’s iPhone. Like most high end smartphones, it runs on an Android powered system: in this case, Android 2.2 Froyo. This is the latest edition of Google’s mobile phone operating system. There are several differences between the Android operating system and the iPhone operating system which some people might consider advantages. To be more specific, Android allows for more customization and many kinds of widgets. Some users prefer the iPhone system because it is simpler and more streamlined, however. The new iPhone operating system has been upgraded to run multi-tasking, but it isn’t exactly the same as the multitasking capability of the Android system. Other benefits of the Android system are voice to text translations, GPS directions, and the ability to install any application that is built for the operating system. In contrast, the iPhone restricts you to use applications only approved by Apple. The decision between these two operating systems is a personal preference.

As far as computing power goes, the Apple iPhone wins. The A4 processor provides it with the ability to process at about a gigahertz, and it offers up memory for 512 MB of RAM. In comparison, the T-Mobile G2 will come equipped with an 800 megahertz Qualcomm Scorpion processor. While the processor speed is a little slower, the memory will be the same. The difference between the two processors most likely won’t be noticeable during most activities, but the iPhone does have the edge in this area.

While the iPhone has a faster processor, it, however, has a slower internet connection than the T-Mobile H2. It will either meet or beat 4G speeds, connecting at between 3 and 6 mbps on average. The iPhone 4 is restricted by the slower AT&T’s 3G connection.

As far as the keyboard goes, there is a world of difference between the two phones. One of the best T-Mobile G2 accessories is the slide out keyboard that comes standard with the phone. Some may be comfortable with the virtual keyboard of the iPhone but many other users prefer the actual keyboard on their phones. For these users, the T-Mobile G2 delivers.

The screen on the G2 is slightly larger than the iPhone 4, which makes it good for viewing videos, movies, and images. On the other hand, the resolution on the iPhone is much higher at 960 x 640 pixels, where the G2 only provides 480 x 800 pixels, making the image on the iPhone much clearer. The cameras on both devices are very comparable to one another, both providing five megapixel picture taking capability, and video recordings with qualities as high as 720p HD with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Both also have an LED flash. The software on the iPhone does come with a program allowing you to edit movies. The iPhone also provides a front facing camera, allowing for face to face chat, while the G2 does not.

The T-Mobile G2 allows more customization in terms of Google G2 accessories and is more open ended when it comes to T-Mobile G2 chargers.

The Not So Fast, Yet Efficient LG Encore

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

It was not too long ago that all touch screen phones were considered the most premier and therefore the most pricey cell phones that were on the market. However, now that touch screen phones have become more established in our society, they have become more reliable and more affordable than ever before. The LG Encore embodies this movement, in where this cell phone is affordable, and embodies the perfect touch screen for modern cell phone users. With its updated internet features, extensive entertainment options, and good call quality, the phone is the ideal phone for an enormous range of people.

Probably the best feature of the LG Encore is its unbeatable affordability. Whereas many people have become accustomed to paying two to three hundred dollars for a good quality touch screen phone, the LG Encore sells for an average of just $49.99. This low price is not a reflection of the phone’s quality; the LG Encore has simply been targeted towards the average person, and its remarkably low price is a part of its marketing appeal. The only difference that one will find between the LG Encore and more expensive touch screen phones is a slightly simpler menu layout on the former. Cases are also very reasonably priced and offer supreme protection to one’s phone.

The phone also possesses numerous entertainment features that will keep users occupied for hours. The phone has a built-in MP3 player with a surprisingly clear audio quality, and also has a handy 3-megapixel digital camera. Also, the Encore is specially designed to surf the Internet. Several internet apps are available to be downloaded onto the phone, such as an email app, an instant messaging app, and a social networking app that is compatible with Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. Users can customize the phone with up to three home screens- one for contacts, one for widgets, and one for shortcuts. The LG Encore is 3G wireless compatible.

The LG Encore’s physical design also confers several distinct benefits on its users. Especially when compared to other touch screen phones, the LG Encore is remarkably thin and very lightweight, making it ideal for pocket transport. The touch screen is wide enough to permit easy use but not so broad that it is uncomfortable to handle. Although such a large screen might present concerns about regular wear and damage, these problems can be easily prevented with the use of LG Encore screen protectors. The phone’s design is also very sleek and stylish, and can be further enhanced by the use of accessories such as a Bluetooth headset or chic charms and key chains.

The LG Encore is the ideal smart phone for any modern consumer who wants all the benefits of these high-end phones without paying the huge pricetag. Although some of the more expensive phones on the market may possess slightly more sophisticated layouts, the LG Encore accomplishes all of the basic abilities of these phones at a fraction of the price. The LG Encore makes it possible for anyone to enjoy amazing features that most smart phone’s have.
